Workshop: Dealing with Instrument Data at Scale: Challenges and Solutions
Presenters: Rachana Ananthakrishnan, Executive Director; Brigitte Raumann, Product Manager

Abstract: Instruments including cryo-EM systems, light sheet microscopes, gene sequencers, and X-ray beam lines play a critical role in biomedical research, where discovery is driven by analysis of increasingly large datasets. Managing the data generated by these instruments is complicated and time-consuming, presenting challenges for both the facilities who operate the instruments and the researchers who use them. Instrument facilities want data off their machines as quickly as possible, and require management tools that can scale to many users with very large datasets; they also need automation capabilities to offload routine data management tasks, saving time and money. And researchers just want their data as quickly as possible, so they can get to the job of analyzing the data, sharing it with collaborators, and publishing it to communities and data repositories. The common need is end-to-end solutions that streamline data management throughout the research data lifecycle. In this workshop, we will demonstrate a fast and reliable way to address these challenges via Globus.

Pathways in the Cloud: Facilitating Storage for Analysis Pipelines
Presenter: Brigitte Raumann, Product Manager

Abstract: Life sciences researchers must contend with data spread across a wide variety of storage system types, including on-premises and cloud storage. In order to efficiently and reproducibly execute data analysis pipelines, researchers need secure and sophisticated data management capabilities that provide unified data access irrespective of storage location and type. In this talk, we will discuss how Globus provides a solution to this challenge, including a success story of a popular data analysis system built on the Globus framework.

Aspects of Performance in Data Movement and Management
Presenter: Vas Vasiliadis, Chief Customer Officer

Abstract: When it comes to moving and managing life science and bioinformatics data, performance is influenced by a multitude of factors. Researchers want their data management solutions to “just work,” without concern for what tend to be esoteric technical details. But delivering tools that simplify a researcher’s life requires a tradeoff between performance, reliability, usability, security, compliance, and technical complexity. In this talk we will explore how service providers should evaluate and prioritize these and other factors, and illustrate how the Globus service strikes an optimal balance, making it the de facto data management solution for over 100,000 researchers around the world. We will present case study examples, and attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences.
