For 2012’s first User of the Month, I’m happy to announce that we have selected Greg Salvesen from the University of Colorado.
Who he is: Greg is a graduate student at the Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Department at the University of Colorado Boulder, studying black holes, jets, and accreting systems from both observational and theoretical perspectives. More information about Greg can be found here.
Why we picked him: Breadth and depth of usage – breadth in the sense that Greg has used Globus Online in a variety of ways; depth because Greg moves very large data sets. Over the past month Greg has transferred 17 terabytes of data, using both the web UI and our command line interface. In total he has moved over 40 TB, making him our top 6th user ever in terms of amount of data moved! Greg has also expanded his usage to do checksum-based sync transfers.
More about Greg's subject area: Greg has been looking at Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability, which has accounted for some of the enormous data sets he has been transferring using Globus Online. This is a fluid instability that develops in the presence of a shear flow and is something he has been studying in an astrophysical context. Specifically, he has been interested in characterizing energy transfer in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence arising from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This has applications to jets launched from supermassive black holes and also to turbulence in accretion disks surrounding black holes and young stars.
